Edmonton downtown in summer

I wanted to “upgrade” my best-selling Edmonton city view this year, and after few visits, it paid off stunningly.

Edmonton downtown at night

The downtown glows from the sunset to 8 PM. I managed to find a day (after many failed attempts) where the wind is reasonable to get this long exposure.

Serenity

I drove 4+ hours (from Edmonton) overnight and reached the lake at 6:30 AM. It was packed, but thankfully, I found a very good spot. The sunrise was glorious (despite the weather prediction being cloudy) - for few minutes before it became cloudy. Those few minutes were more than enough for me to capture this beauty.

Lone spectator

This location is my new obsession. After shooting many unsatisfied images over two years, I finally liked this one. With no distractions, the early morning sunlight, white snow covering the lake, and the sand, I stood there enjoying the view before taking few shots.

Sunset majesty

A couple of friends and I walked more than 20 kilometers in Banff looking for photography opportunities. Eventually, tired, we crashed at Maligne Lake for a while. It was beautiful and lonely (I couldn't believe it). Arriving there an hour before sunset, I could not let the scene go waste. Despite being very tired and awaiting a five-hour drive back home, I spent some time composing this picture and the one to follow in this album.

The arena and the spectators

I did a long drive with my family and on my way, not satisfied with the images I had taken, I was treated with this beautiful sunset. I parked my car right at the roadside, took my camera, and ran around shooting randomly like a child. Then eventually I calmed down, focused on these three trees, and took few shots. I struggled to keep the saturation low while bringing up the shadows since the image had too much color right out of the camera.

The Haunted House

I noticed this composition in a split second on a mid-spring morning drive in the rural areas. It attracted me due to its colors, skeleton trees, and the whole but broken-down shed.

I stopped the car and walked on the road, figuring out the best location until I spotted those lights piercing through the window. I took a few shots in different directions and then spent more than a few days and iterations before I settled with this one.

Protection

I drove like a madman to find a lone shed that fit a chunk of clouds I saw on a rainy forecast day. Thankfully, the clouds stayed large enough when I found one. I immediately pulled my car over, got out with my gear, got low to the ground to ensure the clouds rested on the top of the shed, and photographed a few. Despite the focus staking, I liked this one - one single shot. Contemplating between the colors and B&W, I settled with the B&W since it's largely blue tint due to the daytime and gloomy weather.

Shares of Gray

It took a while to decide whether to retain the colors or convert to black and white for this photograph. Ultimately, I decided to make it black-and-white, allowing me to process the image to evoke a particular feeling. The overcast skies, rain downpours somewhere far behind the shed, and the shades of gray eventually won the conflict. It allowed me to enjoy the scene better than the color.

Sunrise at Niagara

Witnessing Niagara sunrise is surreal listening to the intimidating sound of the waterfall. Even better is getting the fall entirely to yourself at sunrise for at least two hours to witness the sun rising behind the falls, lighting the areas with its orange rays for less than a minute. After many visits to the Niagara, I had the privilege of such a view.

Waiting for the boat

Lighthouses always evoke a positive emotion in the viewer. I spent more than an hour at the lighthouse when visiting Ontario, photographing many long exposures. However, the one that looked good on my wall was without long exposure. I believe it's one of the photographs where emotion overpowers technicality.

The Island

It wasn’t particularly a spectacular sunrise on that day when I went to Sunwapta Falls, dragging my family early morning for a four hours drive. Despite the moody clouds, the place lit up partially when the sun came up, and it was spectacular.

The Journey

Sailing in the sea is a dream for many, despite being achieved by a few. Yacht represents the raw man vs. nature at sea, entirely at the mercy of the wind and skill, capturing one's imagination every time you see.

Connecting history

Structures such as hoodoos tell the story of the past and let you physically feel. When you touch them, you remember the process that took place for centuries and the reality that the world always keeps changing. It is a humbling experience.

Tranquility

I woke up from the camp and walked towards the river with a friend, not knowing what to expect. By this time, I was already frustrated because I had forgotten my L-Bracket, which is very important to a landscape photographer like me. However, this scene's serenity and tranquility made me forget the disappointment, enjoy the quietness and eventually capture this photograph.

Panorama prints

I noticed this massive chunk of clouds floating in the sky when I drove through the farmlands, trying to find a composition on a rainy forecast day after a spell of warm and dry weather. I just knew a place they would fit - only if they lasted long. Thankfully, they did. The post-processing took many days and iterations, but eventually, I settled with this one.

This photograph has it all - the farmland, barn, matching church building, bale, and a couple of old vehicles. I spotted this location during my drive with my family, and it did not disappoint after a couple of early morning visits and photographing it.

Moraine Lake - also called Reddit Lake (for featuring so many times in Reddit), is a treat. Despite visiting often, the turquoise water, mountains, and trees make you forget everything. It took many few trips before I finally got a photograph of the lake I liked, and they look gorgeous on my wall.

The Edmonton downtown view from the river valley never gets old. I have photographed the same composition countless times, and the weather adds something new to the photo each time. A panoramic view gives you an immersive experience.

Like Edmonton downtown, Calgary's downtown view is fantastic. I often spent three hours on the road to this place to photograph the downtown at different times. And almost all the time, I stand lost in the view.
